Sylvan Success Stories our Lancaster and Palmyra, PA Centers

Hear What Students and Parents in Your Neighborhood Say about Sylvan

Results matter. Since 1996, we’ve helped over 3,500 students in the Lancaster and Palmyra area gain confidence in their skills. If you don’t already know a student with a Sylvan success story, let us introduce you.

Simply, Sylvan has given me benefits that many don’t gain.

Sylvan – a place where students are guided by professionals on how to succeed and better themselves in school – a school on school. Being able to participate in the Study Skills Program at the Sylvan Learning Center is the most beneficial extracurricular “activity” I have participated in during my four years of high school. After starting my Sylvan program I noticed a steady increase in all of my grades that during my four years had slipped. As a senior I look back and realize had I had the skills I have developed at Sylvan earlier in my high school career, I believe that I would be looking at a better transcript and better grades. Sylvan Learning Center has given me a leg up on many of my peers at Penn Manor, even those in my Honors and AP Courses. As a future Penn State student, I know the application of skills and knowledge gained from Sylvan will give me the abilities to succeed. Simply, Sylvan has given me benefits that many don’t gain.

Tim S., Grade 12

His confidence, grades and attitude have improved.

Eric is now in sixth grade and his math skills are up to a seventh grade level. His confidence, grades and attitude have improved. With continued hard work, we know that Eric will be successful throughout his school years. Sylvan has played an important role in that success!

The self-esteem she realized through Sylvan made all the difference in the world!

My daughter always has been a hard worker, but she also was very hard on herself. The self-esteem she realized through Sylvan made all the difference in the world! Almost immediately, she was more confident in herself and her school work!

Mother, of a Sylvan Student

He was better able to be positive about his experience.

Jared has several challenges with regard to learning abilities, being tested for these prior to coming to Sylvan.

Jared came to Sylvan in September 2007 with the hope of improving his language and math skills so he could pass the G.E.D. test. He had been vigorously tested prior to this for learning difficulties so the outcome was greatly anticipated. He had some difficulty sitting down and beginning where his learning gaps indicated. Soon, though, as progress began he was able to see that he was moving forward and needed the skills he was learning. Then he was better able to be positive about his experience and realize that he could cover areas that he had not understood. It began to show in his speech and problem solving that he was learning and applying what he had learned. It was working!

He has also made greater strides in learning to play the guitar and dulcimer, which was much harder for him before this.

Barbara A., Mother of Jared

He now has the motivation and self-confidence to tackle his homework!

For the first time in our son’s school career he now has the motivation and self-confidence to tackle his homework assignments by himself -something we never dreamed would occur!

I had so much fun while learning in the process.

I love Sylvan because all of the teachers were so helpful and AWESOME! They really helped me with all of my studies! I had so much fun while learning in the process. It never felt like work. I seriously LOVED my time here.

Heather W., Sylvan Student

I am thankful that my child had this experience.

Before Emalee started Sylvan she wasn’t really at her reading level and didn’t really like reading much. Now Emalee is reading a lot better and wants to read all the time. I am thankful that my child had this experience and got the help that I was unable to give her.

Luz A., Mother of Emalee, Ace It!

I can see a big difference in my son!

My son has done better with his writing as well as following directions. He is able to sound out different words and tries really hard. I can see a big difference in him since he took part in the Ace it! program.

A Parent of a Kindergarten Student, Ace It!

As a parent I am very pleased with the caring staff!

I have seen a great improvement in Dakota’s ability to decode words. Her reading has improved so much. I just want to say thank you to the great staff that worked with my daughter. They are very good at what they do. Dakota has expressed her joy in the program and how she enjoys the different staff members. My daughter is diabetic and not only were they concerned about teaching her, they also wanted to make sure that she had a proper snack. As a parent I am very pleased with the caring staff regarding both my daughter’s educational needs as well as her physical needs. I give a big thank you to everyone involved in the Ace it! program and I am so grateful that Dakota got this opportunity to take advantage of the program and what it had to offer.

From a Parent of a 5th Grade Student, Ace It!

This is an excellent program and I recommend it to others!

My children have been blessed to be enrolled in the Ace it! tutoring program at the Salvation Army in Lebanon. They have brushed up on things, been exposed to new things and gotten much better at all their reading and math skills. I was very pleased with the teachers and the help they provided. I hope my children will have future opportunities to work with Ace it! and Sylvan. The teacher in charge was awesome and really kept the program running smoothly. This is an excellent program and I recommend it to others!

A Parent of 2nd Grade and 7th Grade Students, Ace It!

You all provided me with something unique and helpful that I now have to use at college.

I just wanted to check in and say hello to everyone since I’ve been in classes for three weeks now! I have so much I want to share with you all! Our first paper was due this past Friday and our second this coming Friday. Tonight I got my grade for the first one and I got a B+. I was kinda excited because I’ve never thought of myself as a strong writer, especially to get a B+ on my first college paper. On campus they have this place called Penn State Learning and it’s like the campus tutoring center by upper class men, kinda like Sylvan and they offer writing support. So I started using them to go through my papers with me and it’s been really helpful! They’re going to be really useful in the fall when I have chemistry and math since they have staff designated for those areas as well.

Neither of my classes have homework every night and the homework we have is primarily just work on our major assignments so I haven’t used a planner, but instead I’m using my Google Calendar. It’s nice because I have it set up to text me everyday starting 5 days before an assignment is due as reminders. It’s just like a planner but just not like the high school paper planner. It’s super helpful.

Since we learned so many different note taking styles at Sylvan I’ve tried a few of them out and I’ve come the conclusion that I’m best to just scribble down everything during class and then go back and type my notes up in an outline format. I’m trying to find a way to make my own templates in Word so I can make a Cornell Note Taking style template.

Since I started early over the summer I was enrolled into a special program for incoming Freshman called LEAP. There are sophomores, juniors and seniors staffing the program and they’re called mentors. My favorite quote that I’ve heard by one of the mentors is: “The Kids Who Get Tutored, Are The Ones That Succeed.” Tutoring is a big thing here at Penn State and students are encouraged to get tutored by their peers and meet with professors during office hours. It’s awesome how many opportunities there are to get extra help. Getting the extra help isn’t something I would have probably considered had I not come to Sylvan this past year. Just another one of the uncountable benefits that I’ve got from Sylvan.

Thank you all for everything you helped me with during my senior year! You all provided me with something unique and helpful that I now have to use at college. I even have my Sylvan Study Skills book up here with me sitting on my desk. Honestly, of all of the things I’ve done throughout my few education years this far, Sylvan is most likely the most influential and beneficial program that I’ve been able to participate in.

Thanks Again for Everything!

Tim S., Grade 12

They helped me become prepared for my future in education.

I appreciate Sylvan because they helped me become prepared for my future in education. They have also helped me prepare for tests and big exams for college.

Brittany K., Sylvan Student

I have been on honor roll for four years straight, thanks to Sylvan.

When I was younger I always had trouble learning. My classmates would answer each question easily and I would be left behind confused. I was always embarrassed because if I needed help the teachers would have to teach me in front of the entire class. They would have to stop what they were doing and try to help me while everyone stared at me. It was very uncomfortable. I ignored it until I moved on to middle school. Middle school was some of my toughest years and I was terrified of my math teacher. She would yell at me in front of everyone because I never understood her lessons. She even yelled at me when I knew the answer! One day after school she asked me what the answer was and I took a pause to find where I wrote it down on my paper. Instead of simply waiting for me to answer she sighed loudly and rolled her eyes yelling at me saying that I didn’t know it. She then went on and asked someone else the same question and what do you know … I had it right! She never believed in me or gave any effort to help me. I was never a bad student, I would try my best, pay attention and ask for help. When my parents received my report card they became worried and knew I needed more help. The first thing that they did was meet with my teacher in hopes that she would give tips or more help. She didn’t, in fact she tried to tell my parents I had ADD or ADHD but I never showed any symptoms because I never even had it.

After the meeting, middle school became harder; I was bullied and was failing in several classes. My mother considered home schooling me, but we later ruled that out. Instead I enrolled in Sylvan. I was promised nice teachers and lots of help. On my first day I was really nervous, after all I did have bad experience with teachers, but I was welcomed the moment I walked through the door. Not only were the teachers extremely kind, but my “classmates” were too! I made plenty of friends while I was there and it made me feel less alone. After all we were all there for the same reasons. Learning was something I once hated, but now enjoyed.

School became a breeze! When Sylvan was over for me, I began to realize how much it really affected me, but I have never thought that it wouldn’t just help with my education. Sylvan helped me get into National American Miss because of my honor roll! I have been on honor roll for four years straight, thanks to Sylvan.

I am so thankful for Sylvan and all who have helped me there. I am also extremely thankful that they believed in me. I had the honor of a scheduled meeting to talk about the pageant, and later a check helping me to pay for the pageant so that I could take part in it. This check served two purposes: one to help with the payment and second to prove that someone else believed in me. When I entered the pageant I knew my family would support me. That meant a lot to me that they did, but it meant even more to me that an outside source did as well. I don’t think that I will be able to show how appreciative I am of Sylvan. It helped me in so many ways. Sylvan helped me in confidence, sociality, and education. I will be able to carry those skills on for the rest of my life. I hope that Sylvan will continue to help people of all ages and continue to prove that they are not just going to tutor their students, but they are going to enlighten their students and help them move on not only to a better education, but to a better life.

Thank you for everything and all that you have done for me. I will be forever grateful. I can honestly say that Sylvan was one of the best things that I have been through and will be with me forever. Since my experience with Sylvan went so well I have and will highly recommend Sylvan to those in need of help.

Thank you again for helping me succeed when others did not.

It has helped me with my goals and has made me so happy!

The best thing I like about Sylvan is getting tokens for every hour and that you get to do most of the stuff on iPads!

They truly take an interest in the progress of each student

The teachers and staff know the students by name. They truly take an interest in the progress of each student. The staff/administrators listen to the parents and if a suggestions is given, if possible, the suggestion is implemented. I was worried because the program is costly, but every effort is made to assist parents with payment. My grandson has been attending for two months and I have seen improvement in his academics. Thank you, Sylvan!

Amy B., Sylvan Grandparent

Custom Curriculum and Flexible Scheduling

“The custom curriculum, instruction and personal interactions are what differentiate Sylvan for us. Whereas with some supplemental learning institutions, your child may be in a room with 10 other students as one “instructor” proctors, at Sylvan, I know my child is actively engaging with a certified teacher to ensure her success with the material. I also love how flexible and accommodating the staff have been. No schedule change has ever been an issue for us. As working parents of three children, we truly appreciate this!”

Thanks for the Help!

My daughter looks forward to Sylvan. I especially appreciate you have not adopted common core methods. New is not better. I want her to be correct. How she arrives there is not important in most real life situations. For example, I set aside long division as there are more opportunities for error than short. Thanks for the help. She is improving already!
